Winter has put in another appearance this weekend and the bird feeders have been very busy. The birds were eating all the seed and not dropping any on the ground for the squirrels. This is week 5 of Darcy's P52 and shadows was the challenge. If a shadow has been found here then the sun must be shining and that is a celebration. The sun has made an appearance for a day or few hours, once every 3 to 4 weeks this winter. On our last sighting, we also received a dusting of snow, a beautiful combination to photograph. Our celebrations this year are going to be spread out,  we cannot all find a weekend free where the family can gather,  so there will small get togethers throughout the season. My brother lives on a dairy farm an hour north of me, along the way there is a small village named Leaskdale and it has the house where Lucy Maud Montgomery lived for 15 years. While in Scotland we visited many gardens, but my favourite was the garden of Lucy Mackenzie. Her garden, Lip na Cloiche, is situated close to the shoreline on the Isle of Mull and has a stunning view of Loch Tuath and the Isle of Ulna. July 1 is Canada's 144th Birthday. There will be celebrations in towns and cities across the country. An abstract photo in our national colours, red and white. Hello Everyone, I hope you had a wonderful weekend. It was rainy and overcast for most of my weekend. Saturday was spent making Strawberry Jam, 160 jars in total. The groom, my son, and his bride are giving a jar of jam to each guest as their thank you gift. It took 44 quarts of strawberries,  56 pounds of sugar and 22 boxes of pectin   to make the 160 jars. There are only 6 1/2 weeks until my son's wedding, yikes! and my thoughts are filled with wedding plans. This white poppy is blooming in the front garden and is called 'Royal Wedding'. The Iris are still blooming in the garden. So easy to grow on my sandy soil. A beautiful Iris sibirica (Seberian Iris) My favourite Yellow Iris, given to me from a fellow Master Gardener.  It can be a fussy bloomer, some years it has lovely full blooms and the next no blooms at all.  But it is well worth the wait. A very pale pink iris has been flowering for over a week.

I have a very hard time designing floral arrangements,  but could you imagine doing one only 3 inches tall. I went to a cooking class this afternoon on how to have the ultimate Afternoon Tea Party. There were 10 students in class and the teacher, Moira Sanders made everyone feel so welcome.  She is one of the authors of The Harrow Fair Cookbook. The hellebores have flower buds, they are only three inches tall  and are a welcome sign of spring. The weather has been dry and above freezing, perfect to start some spring pruning.  But this year the pruning is on a very large scale.  A Manitoba Maple in the backyard had to be removed,  it was diseased and the bottom half of the large blue spruce in the front yard died.

This is surreal for our family, 10 days after my Dad passes away my mother-in-law does the same thing. She went into the hospital on December 22 with shortness of breathe and passed away 2 days later. Wow, is the only word I can come up with.
